Project Brief

Students had to gather in a group of six with different major and chose one of the project that they want to work with. Our group, Group 8, chose Food in the city project to work with University of West Bohemia in Czech.

Students in West Bohemia were to join the meeting at week 7 as their semester starts later than us. Czech students were major in designing 3D products, for 7 weeks we were guided to take research on the types of urban farming, targeted audience, user journey map and set direction of how our production will be designed for.

Contextual Research on  3 major types of urban farming, hydroponic, aeroponic and aquaponic farming were researched to understand how it works and its benefits and disadvantages and how other companies are selling them.

Target audience were young adults and fresh graduates as we are around that age group and could easily relate to their wants and needs. 3 personas were made, -

primary persona

1. Willing to commit long term

2. Miss seeing nature as she wasn't able to go out

3. Doing it for health. Both physical and mental health

Secondary persona

1. Tends to follow current trends — in this case, organic food

2. Wants to be fully committed for health purposes

2. However, can't do it with constant monitoring due to work

Tertiary persona

1. Doing it for self development and accomplishment (for exp: I did something productive, its good for the environment.")

2. Just want to find something to do

Online Survey were held gathering 54 participants, to find insights and  wants and needs of urban farming.

Final Project

My part of the project were to design the product with Czech students and do advert video.

Product Design Progress -

Based on the user journey map, the main keyword for the product were :-

Aquaponic Urban farming

DIY Friendly, Low maintanence

Small space, indoor fiendly

Stackable, ability to expand

Beginner Friendly

Aesthetically Pleasing

Initial Sketches

In the beginning ideation sketches some of the keywords were not fulfilled but focused on shape language. and designs of modern furniture. The mechanism and how it works were not properly considered at this stage.

My Sketches

To be able to stack, Czech students suggested hexagon shape inspired from honeycomb and how it stacked up. With the base sketch they developed a proper sketch with demonstration of its mechanism

Czech Students Sketches

From the University of West Bohemia lecturers, the suggested to make a variation of the product as hexagon shape were not realistic as the use of hexagon aquarium is not common. The size were also a problem because it was set in small size but our research does not show how much it could produce organic products to meet the needs of the user.

Czech students reached out to Aquaponic company to find out aquarium ratio to the plant pot and if the pot volume can be greater than the aquarium volume, for example, twice the size or more.

Advert Video Progress

Initial idea was to have 15 - 30 sec 3D product show case in different angles. However the 3D object file was too big too produce the animation within given time and had to use the rendered imgs.

Music used

The music were edited and trimmed to match the duration with the advert video and the animation transitions were edited into the beats of the music.

To apply depths to the product image and make it look like 3D model, after effects 3D camera movement were used.

Reflection

Working with students in University of West Bohemia were a good experience. There were some difficulties to held meeting as the time difference were quite big and it was difficult to communicate. Overall I have learned the most from building the user journey map as I have never done it before and hound it very useful to find the need and wants and how it sets the design direction from start to finish. Working with students from different major helped to accomplish this project to touch in lots of different variety of designs from Ui/UX to posters, logo, 3D product and more. Overall I have enjoyed through out this semester.
