Painting from black and white to colors

Getting the value correct was the main thing I was focused in the beginning of the project. Removing the colors from painting, speed things up as i didn't have to think much of how colors bounce and reflecting to other space and only focus on values. However on the other hand, adding colors after getting the values right especially on complicated places like interior concept art became a very difficult problem to solve out.

Interior Concept Art
Grey scale to Color

In this video it shows how greyscale to color could be difficult to deal with.

One of the main reason is that, using colored brushes could bring out interesting textures and fun to mixing the colors in the workflow of digital painting.

This image shows how it is easy to create appealing textures within seconds on the left and how difficult and longer it takes it is when it is painted in grey scale and adding the colors later on to get the same result.

The video doesn't tells you that painting in grey scale is a wrong way of painting, getting the value right is one of the most important factor of every painting. The best way to get the best of both worlds is to paint roughly in grey scale at first and then bring in the colors in mid stage so that the values are acquired in the first stage and color brush strokes could be added in the following stage.

Rough Grey scale Sketch to Color

Environment concept art took less time to bring in the colors and had more fun while painting till the end when compared to interior design. Through this experience I learned how to be more efficient and broaden the knowledge of how to improve on digital paintings.

Reflection

This semester consisted of three digital painting modules which helped me to learn how to be more efficient and be more effective while losing the small details while catching the big details. It was the toughest semester as it was challenging to meet the deadlines and had to find my own way to beat my weaknesses such as perspective and lighting and painting environments. I have learned new skills and improved on basics of how to paint environment and digital paintings through out the semester and overall it was a good experience till the end.
