Matte Painting
Exercises
Exercise 1 - Value painting
Exercise 2 - Day Time Change
Project 1
Students were to be continued with the imgs chosen for the value study and
color them exactly like the imgs. Students had to color 3 of the chosen image
and pick one for final polish.
Project 2 - Apocalypse Photo Bashing
Some sort of natural disaster has affected our resources and mutated all
living beings. Emerging mutants have taken over the world and left the normal
beings to build a gate that transports them to next safe zone or alternative
planet". This gates are build surrounding a cold environment with scraps of
technology parts that has been modified.
Based on the brief, students were to make total three concepts to demonstrate
different angles, environment.
Frost Punk #1
Ice age apocalypse, story line is that during the long ice age people went
into war among themselves to survive to long cold winter, some scientists have
found a way to use technology to open a gate to go back to the past as the
future holds no hope.
City Ruins #2
Post apocalypse scenario after nuclear war. Engineers developed a portal that
allows people to go to radioactive city ruins for short period of time to loot
and scrap materials to survive. Some humans survived by wearing suits to
protect them from radiation and some deformed into something monstrous
LOKI TVA Door #3
Inspired from the Disney Loki series, a scene where TVA agents opening door
like portals to travel to different locations and timelines.
Project 3
Project 3 were to pick one of the concept from project 2 and make it into 3D
space using after effects. Ruined city #2 was chosen to proceed.
Refurbishing perspective and depths
First Attempt
YouTube link
Lecturer mentioned that the fog was too strong and it does not have much depth
and 3D space. The size of the objects and the perspective were not working
well too.
2nd Attempt
To focus on perspective and depth, it was worked in black and white. to
enhance the depth of space, the buildings were pushed backward and increased
the size of the portal.
Cinematography - Blocking in triangular positions
this blocking technique is used in films by placing actors in triangular
positions to one another, making a shape that you won’t pick up consciously,
but is pleasing to your eye. This method of causing the audience’s eyes to
dart around the screen is triangular blocking or triangular composition.
Reference in Films
Progress
Triangular composition were made up between the skeleton giant, the portal and
the man standing next to the portal.
Adjusting light reflection on the Portal
After effects
All elements and objects were downloaded separately in pngs, and used
stock smoke videos and lighting videos to add effects to the environment.
Blur, wiggle and particle effects were also added
Using the 3D tool the objects were placed accordingly and moved the camera
around to make it appear like its in 3D space.

Reflection
At the beginning i was burnt out at an early stage doing the matte painting
exercise where we were made to draw exactly like the reference image. i
tired to capture all the details of what i could see and realized the key
was to simplify what i see and capture the essence first. I learned how to
breakdown the scenery and simplify into basic shapes to understand how to
draw the scene. Photo bashing were less of an hassle as i could just import
images from the internet but getting the perspective right was the most
difficult part of it. Lighting were also tricky to capture as it was
challenging to know where and how the light would bounce off. Overall it was
a good experience through out the module learning and refining the basics of
building a space.
