Final Project
On this project students were to find a bad example of typography used in advertisements, marketing or logos and improve them based on knowledge gained from previous exercises and projects.
For this project research was done on google doodle on October 9 which is Hangul day when Hangul (Korean alphabets) were made.

Google doodle in 2010 was chose for this exercise as it seems to have lot of improvements could be made.in this google doodle, Korean alphabets replaced the English alphabets in water color texture brushes.

To improve this google doodle, Korean alphabets could modify into English alphabets for better readability. The early Korean alphabets when it was first written and documented will be the base to create the typeface as it would help to bring out the characteristics of the 'Day Hangul was made'.
Hun-min-jeong-eum
Hun-min-jeong-eum is a document describing an entirely new and native script for the Korean language. the script was initially named after the publication, but later came to be known as Hangul. it was created so that the common people illiterate in Hanja could accurately and easily read and write the Korean language. Hangul was personally created by Sejong the Great, the fourth king of the Josen Dynasty and revealed by him in 1443. Hun-min-jeong-eum was announced in Volume 102 of the Annals of King Sejong, and its formal supposed publication date, October 9th, 1446, is now Hangul Day in South Korea.

Modern Day Hangul
As the time passed on some parts of the Hangul changed such as dots that represented vowels were changed into strokes and some arrangements of the alphabets were modified as ㅂㄷ and ㄹㅇ cant be placed together in a single letter.

Developing Typeface
Capital letters and small letters were written in Photoshop and then modified in illustrator. The design were based on Fig 1.04. Gill Sans was used to compare and adjust the letters.

Headings
'Hangul Day' is the heading for this google doodle. It is written in all caps and in Small letters to see which works best.

The thickness of the letters are not constant which made it look unprofessional and the readability was not good and had to be improved.
Second Attempt
The idea was to apply characteristics of most commonly used Korean typeface in to English alphabets. Nanum Myungjo, korean typeface was chosen to be used to extract characteristics.

The characteristics are applied to English alphabets and redesigned. Futura book was used as a base. The typeface was decided to be named Futura Hanbok.

Mr Vinod gave feedback on how to improve letters design.
Changes made
Capital Letters
A,B,D,E,F,M,P,R,S and T were made small fixes.

Small Letters
Almost all of small letters had to be changed as their 'ears' were too big.

Mr vinod said that eco bag and the notebook has no connection with the intend of the key design. but on the other hand, the google page works well. new key designs were made for the variation for the google logo of the main google page.

FEEDBACK
-week 10
the width of the letters were not uniform and the readability should be improved. use of illustrator is strongly suggested rather than use of Photoshop.
-week 11
the addition of the ears were too big in capital letters and mostly to all the small letters. overall the design were set.
-week 12
the capital letter of 'M' looks better before it was fixed. overall everything was fine and should carry on with the collateral design.
-week 13
Mr vinod said that eco bag and the notebook has no connection with the intend of the key design. but on the other hand, the google page works well.
REFLECTION
Experience
-week 10
using tablet and stylus to create a type face had problems having consistent width and clean lines.
-week 11
it was better to use illustrator to create smooth lines rather than using Photoshop.
-week 12
overall the creating all English alphabets and
incorporating Korean type face into it were interesting to work with.
-week 13
it was difficult to think of collateral designs at first as main goal was to design google doodle.
Observation
-week 10
the hand drawn letters had its own characteristics of randomness and nonuniform lines.
-week 11
use of the illustrator made clean lines and looked more professional.
-week 12
overall the characteristics of the nanum font were interesting to work with.
-week 13
The color gradient of Korean flag helped a lot to implement Korea vibe to the typeface and overall aesthetics.
Findings
-week 10
it was interesting to find research the origins of hangul while doing the typeface.
-week 11
the use of nanum characteristics of on English alphabets added uniqueness to the alphabets which i personally had familiarity of nanum typeface.
-week 12
adding too much change and distortion to the letters may apply uniqueness but it affects readability and the overall appearance of the letters when typed.
-week 13
for the collateral, rather than physical goods, digital goods seemed to fit much better.

TITLE - 1000 Type Treatments
PUBLISHER - Gloucester, Mass : Rockport Publishers
PUBLISHED - 2005
this book contained 1000 layouts and typefaces used in Flyers + Leaflets, Books + Magazines and Logos + Stationary. This book really helped to gather ideas of how different types of typefaces can be used in many situations and in different formats in harmonious ways. This book would be very useful for research and reference for future assignments and so on.

This book contains good anatomy of the capital letters and lowercase letters. How the design process is made and letters individually broken down and analysed. it also contained letter spacing and kerning and how certain letters such as LT and Ty should be moved closer to close the gap.
