Exercise 1 : Typographic Systems
week 1 26.08.20

On first week, eight types of typographic systems were to be used to create two poster for each systems with given information.

After the feed back, grid system and modular system had to be fit in grid and redone.

Exercise 2A : Type and Play - Finding type
week 2 02.09.20

students had to chose an image between man-made objects or structures or nature. After selecting the image the image needs to be dissected and analysed to identify five potential letter forms.

Selected Image

Dissecting the image

Extracting the letters

Extracted Letters

Adjusting the letters

Fig 2.09 Adjusting letters (02.09.20)

Letters are compared to Futura typeface and adjusted without losing too much of its inherit style.

After the letters were adjusted, to enhance the oil paint style, textures were added and edges of the letters were refined.

Exercise 2B : Type and Image
week 3 09.09.20

An image of man-made structure or object, and nature will be combined with a letter/word/sentence. The objective is to enhance or support the interplay between the chosen letter/word/sentence and the selected image. the text must be woven into a symbiotic relationship with the image.

Attempt 01

Chosen image - Dancing Black Cat

Fig 3.01 Dancing Black Cat meme (09.09.20)

Progress

I have illustrated the cat with Photoshop as the image resolution was too low to work with.

Fig 3.02 Image illustration progress (09.09.20)

Adding the text to the illustration. The size of canvas is set to A3 size. Three color scheme was made to see the layouts and to see the harmony of the illustrations and the text. 'Take a Look' is a pun in Korea how cats are called as the cats acts strange and weird making people to look at them.

Attempt 01 Outcome

Texts are added with mixed paint flowing visual to give more dynamics and the randomness of the cat in a weird pose.

Attempt 02

Chosen Image - Jumping Cat by Kemal Slimovic

Fig 3.05 Photography of Kemal Slimovic (09.09.20)

This image is also illustrated to have consistent visual. 'Butterfly Effect' is chosen to be used with this image as it is literally the reason why the cat jumped.

Fig 3.06 First layout of Attempt 02 (09.09.20)

Fig 3.07 Second layout of Attempt 02 (09.09.20)

For this layout the word butterfly effect is distorted to express the meaning of butterfly effect which is an idea of small things can have non-linear impacts on complex system, a concept of butterfly flapping its wings causing a typhoon.

Fig 3.08 Third layout of Attempt 02 (09.09.20)

After feedback, the lecturer mentioned the typeface design has no relation with the image and suggested to try using shadows to blend in the typeface.

FEEDBACK

-week 1-2
Most of the systems were fine but when grid system and modular system were used I did not use the grid in a proper way so i had to arrange and align them in a proper grid.

-week 3
The letters extracted and adjusted were done nicely, no other fixes need to be made.

-week 4
the artwork looked nice but the typeface design and the image did not blend well together as there were no relation.

REFLECTION

Experience

-week 1
It was hard to use some of the systems as I was not familiar with those kinds of systems but as I researched and worked on it, I've found a way to work with it

-week 2
at first glance the task seemed too much to be finished in one week but as i worked on it, refining the letters and applying inherent style to the typeface were enjoyable.

-week 3
It was fun working with the paint strokes to create a typeface digitally.

-week 4
Had fun with this exercise as there were lots of thing to be experimented. however most of the work was not acceptable as the typeface did not express the image.

Observation

-week 1
although the systems are different, they all had one common goal which is the readability and passing on the information. The design had to draw the attention to the viewer and the information had to be passed with good readability.

-week 2
The final outcome were satisfying, the textures helped to bring out the inherent style.

-week 3
the pen tool could really bring the texture of the strokes which was surprising. dissecting the image seemed unreasonable at first but in the end it did help to find the letters.

-week 4
the background surroundings and the basic aura had to be observed to express typography that supports the chosen image.

Findings

-week 1
The eight systems given were some what similar but had different unique styles. The systems helped me to observe and differentiate the systems used by designers.

-week 2
I've found out how the designers make the typography to have hand written appearance digitally, and how they are inspired by surrounding objects.

-week 3
found new techniques to imply brush textures to typeface.

-week 4
The typography should be seen as one with the image which was difficult but managed to find a way to blend in the typography using shadows.
