LECTURES
Lecture 7: Understanding Letterforms
week 7 (29.05.20)
week 7 (29.05.20)
Uppercase
They do seem to be symmetrical but they are not.
comparison of typefaces could be figured by how stems finish and bowls meet,
it will show palpable differences.
Maintaining X height
curved strokes does rise above the median or sink below the baseline but
vertical and horizontal strokes adjoins.
Form / Counterform
Adjustment of space between letterform increases or decrease readability.
Counterform plays important role being able to recognize the form of words
and letterform it self.
To develop better understanding of dorm and counter it is advised to exam
them in close details.
Contrast
a powerful dybanuc in design, simple contrast produce muliple variations
such as small
+organic/ large+machined/ small+dark and large+light.
Lecture 8
week 8 (05.05.20)
Demonstration on how to use fontlab of how to transfer glyph from Adobe
Illustrator to fontlab.
Lecture 9 : Screen and Print
week 9 (12.05.20)
Different in Medium
in past publication edited, type set and printed typography and it was done.
these days typography exists on multitude screen such as operating systems,
system fonts, device and screen itself. Typography changes based on how pages
are rendered as type setting happens in browser.
Type for Print
Text should be smooth, flowing, pleasant to read.
Calson, Garamond, Baskerville typefaces are most commonly used as it is highly
readable at small font size. Also they are versatile and easy to digest.
Screen Type
Optimized, modified to enhance readability and performance on screen.
Typography tends to have taller x height, wider letterforms, more open
counter, heavier and thin strokes and serif or reduced stroke contrast
modified curves and angles.
Hyperactive link / Hyperlink
tends to be a word, phrase or image that can be clicked to jump to a new page
or document. Mostly it is in blue or underlined and when the cursor is placed
on the hyperlink it will change to a tiny hand.

Project 2
week 7 - 0 (29.05.20 - 00.06.20)
For the project 2 , the students had to come up with their own typeface design
based on the 10 typefaces given on previous exercises. Before diving in to
designing typeface, analyzing typeface had to be done first to develop a
deeper understanding the basics of typeface.
Gill Sans was chosen to be analysed. Letter D, H and O was told to be analysed
as letter H and O often used to create letter D by typeface designers. Adobe
illustrator is used to dissect them using guidelines and circles.

Sketches for Typeface design
the Sketch is drawn using procreate app on iPad. the Second and the third
design were to be developed further to be used for the final outcome.

Progress using Adobe Illustrator
The design is based on Gill sans Bold. The designs of the second and the third
is combined together.

Outcome
For the Final outcome, a poster art in A4 size had to be made written ' I am a
Type God, Obey Me! '. It could be done in all capital letter nor small
letters. Letters A,B,D,E,G,I,M,O,P,T,Y and a comma and exclamation mark had to
be made.

After all the letters are copied in and aligned to descender line, ascender
line, x height and the caps height, kerning should be done so that letters are
not too far apart or too close together.

Final outcome
For the final outcome the letters are to be in one size and very minimal
elements were allowed. The initial layout below was not suitable for the final
outcome.

This layout suited all the instructions given and acceptable to be final
outcome.

FEEDBACK
week 7 (29.05.20)
shown 4 sketches for project 2, Mr Vinod remarked that two of the sketches
was interesting to work with.
week 8 (05.06.20)
Mr Vinod liked the typeface design the extended arms and tails of the
letters were interesting
week 9 (12.06.20)
The whole layout should be placed upwards and the name and the date should
be placed somewhere more suited with the designed typeface as it is in
awkward position
week 10 (19.06.20)
The black line looked awkward in the final layout.
REFLECTION
week 7 (29.05.20)
Experience
It was challenging to create typeface as each and every alphabets had to
be made and for my design the short lines within the alphabet strokes were
very time consuming.
Observations
Gill sans font was really my ideal choice all time, creating typeface
sketches based on gill sans was simple and direct.
Findings
As final outcome would be making poster, using bold typeface would be more
suited for this project
week 8 (05.06.20)
Experience
Creating my own font was interesting and fontlab application was simple
and direct to work with.
Observations
The basic anatomy of the typeface of descender, x height, ascender helped
to create the typeface without messing up the sizes of the letters.
Findings
Adobe applications does work and support with other applications very well.
week 9 (12.06.20)
Experience
By the help of previous exercises it was much easier to come up with simple
poster art
Observations
Using black and white only was helping to understand simple compositions
rather than jumping into colors in the beginning
Findings
Experience and exposure to artworks really helps out when coming into
designing layouts and compositions.
week 10 (19.06.20)
Experience
Using only the typeface to design the poster was simple and straight
forward but I had to carryout many trials.
Observations
As simple as it becomes the basics of design principle became more
dependent.
Findings
Had to look for more references and there are loads of artworks that i
have yet to discover.

this book contains brief introduction of 47 typeface designers of how they
work and brief explanatory of their artwork styles. More than 200 pages were
filled with artworks of the the type face designers. This book would be
great for reference for typeface designs, layouts and formats.

This book contains lots variety of type face how each type face brings
different atmosphere with artworks as reference. It also focuses on design
principles such as the emphasis and contrast. This book shows how typography
could be used in multiple objects such as books, posters, magazines and goods.
