Project 2 - Sense of Place
For this project, within students given space and surroundings had to be
observed and recorded in photographs or sketches and translate them into a
design work that reflects the interpretation of a place showing multiple
aspects of the place.
Photographs

Korea.

ATTEMPTS
Attempt 01
For the first attempt, the idea was multiple dimensions within one scenery.
The different dimensions are opened through a door, the dimensions could be
a place somewhere magical or could be a same place but in different seasons
( different timeline). My family moved very often in Malaysia and was
exposed to different environment which was always fun and interesting for
me, and the concept of different environment in one space was the concept of
the artwork.

Sketch
The sketch layout did not contain the visual I was looking for and the
meaning within the artwork was not carried out successfully.

Attempt 02
The concept of the second attempt was the idea of the new norm. How would it
be if people could breath in water and how the new normal lifestyle would
be. The normal things people do casually, could look very different yet
familiar and that concept would be interesting to be worked with.

Sketch
The most normal and casual life scenery chosen was shopping for grocery. The
photo taken from the convenient store was used as the reference and it
is infused with marine life.

Project 2 Conclusion
Reflection
Not many ideas came up for this project which ended up with two
sketches, normally at least 3 sketches were made. lots of thoughts were
made for the colors for the final outcome. initially a very bright
environment as morning daylight was set but changed to a dark
environment light up by the jelly fish but then the final outcome had
ended up with little bit of both. It was always mesmerizing to observe
the marine life and how close but far away that environment is. It was
fun to work with combining marine life with modern life.
Feedback
The first sketch did not seem to work and it was better to carry on with
the second sketch. It was suggested to add more sea elements for the
second sketch.
Final Feedback
I can see that the way you documented everyday scenes (Fig 1 - 4) is in photographic angles. i really like the traditional rooftop of your grandparents house. Your idea of different worlds co existing is drawn from your experience in a different culture- truly a personal interpretation for this project. The final design expresses that concept well, along with the interplay of design principles such as harmony and movement.
