LECTURES

Lecture 5
week 5 (15.05.20)

No lecture
Demonstration of Adobe indesign taken place

Lecture 6: Text Part 2
week 6 (22.05.20)

Paragraph

indicating paragraph by pilcrow. when point size is 10 leading should be between 12 to 13. Laeding space should be equal to paragraph spacing for cross alignment.

befference between linespace and spacing is that linespace is the baseline of one sentence to descender of other sentence and leading is space between two sentences.

indentation is often used in newspapaers to save space.

widows and orphans

widows are short lines left alone at the end of column of text
orphans are short line of type left alone at start of new column

both should never occur in our design

flushing right or ragging left is more forgivable than widows and orphans and to remove them using force lone break or .letter spacing or kerning should do the work.

Highlighting

use of italics, making it bold changing type family is usually used. changing color of text is also used in cyan magenta or black are the only colors allowed.

bold typefaces should have smaller pointsize by 0.5 as they are larger than medium.

creating box to highlight body texts are also used, the box could be maintained within reading axis or it could exceed, same goes to bullet points.

Project 1
week 5 - 6 ( 15.05.20 - 22.05.20)

For this project two 20mm x 20mm sheets were suppose to be designed using given articles. First page was to be designed as cover page consisting headings and the second page to layout given article in clear manner as how the previous exercises were done.

Article about Bauhaus was chosen

Sketch 01

Sketch drawn on iPad Procreate. Large alphabet B placed diagonally on the right edge. Bauhaus word overlapped at the right corner. main idea was to fall down letters from above and create minor glitch effect. Did not carry on with the sketch as glitch idea was used previous exercises.

Sketch 02

Sketch drawn on iPad Procreate. Idea derived from magazine layouts. the composition of the letters were satisfied so tried to carry on with Adobe indesign.

First Attempt

Was not happy with the first attempt as alignment as well as spacing and composition were not in the right place. the Grid and Margin layouts were not followed well.

Second Attempt

Even though alignments were made, negative space and positive space balance were poorly made.
second design attempt based on sketch 02

Third Attempt

Carried on with the third attempt, added minor elements to add balance and equal spaces with some consistency. Was not still satisfied with the third attempt decided to go on with new design.

Sketch 03

Final Sketch made. Stem of letter B removed and layouts of elements form sense of the stem creating the silhouettes of the letter B.

The sketch and the idea was simple so it was carried on directly to
Adobe Illustrator.

The composition was easy and simple so it was remade in Adobe indesign with minor changes. The second page were divided by three margins. One main heading at the top and three paragraphs with three own different minor headings.

FEEDBACK

week 5 (15.05.20)

no feedback

week 6 (21.05.20)

feedback of Project 1 was short and brief, Mr Vinod was impressed of the layout. Cover page had few elements that looked awkward and needed to be replaced or removed. For second page, sub headlines had to be more aligned to center of the body texts and more kerning had to be done for body texts.

REFLECTION

week 5 (15.05.20)

Experience

Although it was very familiar to use there were many rules and basics that needs to be followed by heart in order to complete this assignments which was very challenging.

Observations

If the rules and basics were understood, creating layouts and lots of varieties of work can be done within short period of time.

Findings

After this lecture all the kernings, letter spacing used in the industry were more interesting and more visible.

week 6 (21.05.20)

Experience

working with adobe illustrator which i was more familiar with. it was fun to work project 1 as it felt creating poster art using typographic elements.

Observations

typographic elements creates good contrast which made it more enjoyable to create cover for project 1.

Findings

Trying out different sketches leads to better outcome than working sorely on one sketch design.

FURTHER READING

Week 5 (15.05.20)

TITLE - 1000 Type Treatments
PUBLISHER - Gloucester, Mass : Rockport Publishers
PUBLISHED - 2005
Fig 2.01 Book cover of 1000 Type Treatments

this book contained 1000 layouts and typefaces used in Flyers + Leaflets, Books + Magazines and Logos + Stationary. This book really helped to gather ideas of how different types of typefaces can be used in many situations and in different formats in harmonious ways. This book would be very useful for research and reference for future assignments and so on.

Week 6 (21.05.20)

TITLE - Letter Fountain
AUTHOR - Joep Pohlen
PUBLISHED - 2015

Fig 2.02 book cover of Letter Fountain

This book contains good anatomy of the capital letters and lowercase letters. How the design process is made and letters individually broken down and analysed. it also contained letter spacing and kerning and how certain letters such as LT and Ty should be moved closer to close the gap.
