LECTURES
Lecture 1 : Introduction to typography
week 1 (17.04.20)
Mostly focused on the introduction of the module and how to make E-portfolio. Later on we had brief introduction to our first exercise Type Expression. The exercise is that we are given seven typefaces and use them to express and describe six words given by using Adobe illustrator.
Lecture 2: Development
week 2 (24.04.20)
on this lecture we've learnt history of typography development. The lecture was based on western point of view.
Phoenician to Roman
Initially writing was done by scratching into wet clay or carving into stone with chisel. the letters involved combination of straight lines and pieces of circles. Phoenicians had a style of writing called 'boustrophedon' where lines of text read alternately form right to left and left to right. Letterform changed as the time went by from Phoenician in 1000 B.C.E. to Greek 900 B.C.E and to Roman 100 B.C.E.
Square capitals (4th or 5th century) were found in roman monuments and this letterform contained serifs to the end of their strokes.
Compressed version of square capitals, rustic capitals ( late 3rd - mid 4th century ) allowed twice as many words on a sheet of parchment and took less time to write but harder to read.
Square and Rustic were often used for documents till cursive was favored for speed.
Uncial (4th - 5th) incorporated some aspects of Roman cursive hand and broad forms of uncial are more readable than rustic capitals.
In Northern Europe , a condense strongly vertical letterform, black letter/ textura gained popularity, while in south, rounder more open hand gained popularity called rotunda.
Black letter to Gutenberg's (C, 1300) his skills included engineering, metal smiting and chemistry. He mimicked the work of scribe's hand to marshaled them all to build pages. His mold required different brass matrix, negative impression for each letterform.
Lecture 3: Text/ Tracking - Kerning and Letter Spacing
week 3 (01.05.20)
Went through brief descriptions of kerning, letterspcaing and tracking adm how to use them and how they are used in the industry.
Kerning refers to automatic adjustment of space between letters. Letterspacing refers to adding the space between letters. Tracking refers to the addition and removal space between letters.
Lecture 4: Basics of Typography
week 4 (08.05.20)
Went through basics of typography to describe letterforms. With any given typeface they consists of terms or lexicons that describes every part. Such as -

EXERCISE
Type Expression
week 1 - 0 ( 17.04.20 - 24.04.20)
on this exercise we were given seven typefaces and eight words. Six words have to be chosen and expressed the words using given type faces. Adobe illustrator were to be used for this exercise. Lecturers recommended on making sketches before going straight to work using adobe illustrator.
For this exercise, I figured sketching using procreate seemed more suitable as I can write in given typeface design and explore.
Progress
DISAPPEAR given glitch effect to show the word to glitch and be disappeared.
on the sketch there was a typo which is fixed in the final outcome
PUSH the letter U been rotated and rocketed to the right side pushing the letters S and H
DROWN the letters are sinking in the waves to apply drowning visual
FLY the arms of the letter Y turned into a bird to fly away
LOUD given Radial Blur to show the vibration of the loud sound
HIDDEN the stems of the words are hidden by degrading the colors
Based on the feedback final outcome was remade.

EXERCISE
Animation
week 2 - 3 ( 24.04.20 - 01.05.20)
Choose one of the type expression from week one exercise and create animation using Adobe illustrator and Photoshop.
Type expression Disappear was chosen for this exercise.
To begin with, more than 24 art boards were created on illustrator and started filling them up.The main objected was to give glitch effect on the word disappear and the word would be gone in the end.
Progress
Total 27 art boards were made. At the beginning minor glitch was made and towards the end glitch effect gets stronger and the word breaks up even more and in the end the word disappears. Rather than white background, black background seemed to be more suitable for this exercise.
After the art boards were made Photoshop is used to create the animation and export as GIF
Made some experiments with the frame rate from 12 to 15 to 23.9. Frame rate set as 23.9 was the best option.

week 4 - 5 ( 15.05.20 - 00.05.20)
For this exercise adobe indesign were used. Mr Vinod has uploaded a video about how to create business card text formatting and letterhead text formatting and introduction to creating columns and grids.
First ten typefaces were given and on this task, one of the typeface was to be chosen to carry on with the exercise
.
First task was to create Busines card. First two format with home address, telephone number, email and blog link was given by Mr Vinod. Two or more composition had to be made.
Final Outcome for Business Card
Moving on to Letterhead text formatting. Created four columns and six grid lines. Essay which was written on other lecture was used to fill up the text box. Paragraph spacing and leading technique applied to lines to be uniform.
Outcome for Letterhead Text format
Next exercises were done through Facebook Live stream. Envelop were format given and were given instructions fill it with my information.

FEEDBACK
Week 1 (17.04.20)
there was no feedback as we only had lectures
Week 2 (24.04.20)
drown looked more of floating, loud did not seemed to work, letter U of push was too strong, arms of y changed into bird were suggested not to be changed. Loud made into exclamation mark was satisfied, Drown had too much elements but Mr Vinod let it slide as it was not too strong.
Week 3 (01.05.20)
no lecture, no feedback given
Week 4 (08.05.20) - Week 5 (15.05.20)
Envelop and name card was good except on the First layout of the name card with just my name there were two spaces in between the name, that need to be fixed. Letter spacing was all wrong as it was forced to be stretched to match the lines within the margin. head lines and the written essay needed to be in single text box. For the final layout using 2 pages were not allowed.

Lecture 6: Text Part 2
week 6 (22.05.20)
Paragraph
week 6 (22.05.20)
Paragraph
indicating paragraph by pilcrow. when point size is 10 leading should be between 12 to 13. Laeding space should be equal to paragraph spacing for cross alignment.
befference between linespace and spacing is that linespace is the baseline of one sentence to descender of other sentence and leading is space between two sentences.
indentation is often used in newspapaers to save space.
widows and orphans
widows are short lines left alone at the end of column of text
orphans are short line of type left alone at start of new column
both should never occur in our design
flushing right or ragging left is more forgivable than widows and orphans and to remove them using force lone break or .letter spacing or kerning should do the work.
Highlighting
use of italics, making it bold changing type family is usually used. changing color of text is also used in cyan magenta or black are the only colors allowed.
bold typefaces should have smaller pointsize by 0.5 as they are larger than medium.
creating box to highlight body texts are also used, the box could be maintained within reading axis or it could exceed, same goes to bullet points.
Lecture 7: Understanding Letterforms
week 7 (29.05.20)
week 7 (29.05.20)
Uppercase
They do seem to be symmetrical but they are not.
comparison of typefaces could be figured by how stems finish and bowls meet, it will show palpable differences.
Maintaining X height
curved strokes does rise above the median or sink below the baseline but vertical and horizontal strokes adjoins.
Form / Counterform
Adjustment of space between letterform increases or decrease readability. Counterform plays important role being able to recognize the form of words and letterform it self.
To develop better understanding of dorm and counter it is advised to exam them in close details.
Contrast
a powerful dybanuc in design, simple contrast produce muliple variations such as small
+organic/ large+machined/ small+dark and large+light.
